Marine Science Beach Seine Sept. 9

Orcas Island High School Marine Science class
set out on a field trip today to Beach Seine in
Deer Harbor and West Sound. You might be
asking your self what is a beach seine? Well let
me tell you. A beach seine is a marine species
study where you pull the seine net out into the
water and bring the net back into shore, hopefully with
fish and other surprises!

Here we see the net being pulled in a circle

now the students are pulling the leaded side of
the net together so that the fishes won't escape

After the net is gathered and pulled together
the specimens are dumped into the bucket to
be measured and counted and categorized. Here
we have some sculpins and green crab?

A nice shot of the net being dragged out for catchment
in West Sound.
